HOW WE HELP YOU FIND THE PERFECT WATCH.

At Alexander’s, you’ll find true watch aficionados, trained to help you navigate the seemingly endless options available to you. We’ll take the time to explain how to find the perfect watch for your wants and needs. Here are the things we’ll discuss with you:

Purpose

Some people want a watch to wear merely as jewelry, and that’s just fine! Others, though, are looking for distinct functionality, accuracy, or special complications. We’re here to go over all of the specifics so you can feel confident in your selection.

Brand

Alexander’s is proud to boast some of the world’s most sought-after timepieces. If there’s a certain brand or model you’re looking for, if we don’t have it, we can help you get it.

Case Size

This refers to the diameter and thickness of the watch’s main bezel area. While some watch buyers may be looking for a very substantial and bold look, others are looking for simple elegance. Cases also come in many different shapes, such as circular, squares, ovals, tank, and even more. There’s no wrong look when it comes to watches. It’s all up to you as the customer!

Case Material

Just like fine jewelry metals, case material matters. We’ll discuss the particulars with you, such as why stainless steel and titanium may be the better choice for an active person, while gold may be the best for a formal dress watch.

Dial

Watches today are much more complex than those of the past. For example, a chronograph watch has three dials; second, minute, and hour. There are also subdials to track things like different time zones or phases of the moon.

Bracelet or Strap

Another thing to think about is the strap that will hold your watch on your wrist. Bracelet styles are typically metal and have links that can be added or removed to secure a good fit. You’ll find bracelet styles on many classic, dressier watches. Straps made of leather, alligator, fabric, or sometimes a plastic synthetic material have drilled holes for easy adjusting and are seen on classic watches and those made for an active lifestyle.

Movement

Mechanical movement watches can either be manual wind or automatic. For a mechanical movement to work continuously, the spring needs to be wound periodically. If a person is a watch purist they will insist this is the right type of watch to have, and it’s the original or classic option. This does not mean they don’t keep accurate time, though. They’re extremely accurate and will only lose or gain a few seconds per day. A Rolex is a mechanical movement watch. The other main watch movement category is quartz. Quartz watches are powered by batteries that vibrate little crystals. When an electrical current is applied, the crystal will vibrate at its resonance frequency, making it a type of oscillator. In watches, this oscillation can be harnessed for timekeeping. It replaces the role of the balance wheel and mainspring. A quartz watch is accurate within a few seconds per year.

Tang Buckle or Deployment Clasp

Beyond the choice of a bracelet or strap is specifically how the strap or bracelet is secured on a watch. A tang buckle is perhaps the most common type of watch strap with its signature pin that holds and secures the watch to your wrist, similar to a belt buckle. The pin is usually made of stainless steel and is mostly used on leather and textile watch straps. They provide a classic and simple look that's still dressy. Conversely, a deployment clasp is a folded piece of metal with a hinge that tightens up the watch. You’ll find them more commonly on bracelet style bands, but it’s an option on straps too.

Water Resistance

Long ago, you would worry about getting your watch wet. These days, some type of water resistance is commonplace with watches. A watch stamped with "water resistant" means that it is humidity-protected, too. It can endure washing your hands or being caught in the rain. However, water resistance does not necessarily mean you should swim or shower with your watch on. Water is the biggest enemy of a watch unless you’re diligent about purchasing one that is safe for serious water contact. If that’s something you desire, a watch should have a minimum depth rating of 100 meters. This makes it okay for snorkeling and swimming, but for serious dives, it is best to have a watch that is water resistant to at least 200 or 300 meters.

Complications

For non-watch aficionados, complications can seem, well, complicated. However, this is watch terminology that primarily refers to “extras” you want in a watch. These complications can range from a chronograph that acts like a stopwatch to a GMT that tracks several time zones at once to a moonphase and a perpetual calendar. And that’s just a handful of what is available. At Alexander’s Jewelers, we can help you decide which will work best for you and your needs and wants.

WHAT THE MASTER WATCHMAKERS WE WORK WITH OFFER

Complete Overhaul Service

Every 5-7 years, a fine timepiece should be overhauled to maintain optimal working condition and accuracy. This process prevents excessive wear from damaging your watch’s movement.

Timekeeping Testing & Regulating

Time testing and regulating is also recommended for any fine timepiece. Our Master Watchmakers ensure your timepiece maintains accurate time. Every watch is tested to meet their standards once precise timing adjustments are made.

Refinishing, Cleaning, Repair & Polishing

Of course, the outside condition of your watch is as important as the interior working mechanism. They’ll remove damage and scratches, and refinish it to make your watch look as perfect as the day you purchased it.

Water Resistance and Pressure Testing

If there is any moisture in your watch, we recommend you bring it in as soon as possible. To ensure the integrity of your watch, water resistance and pressure tests are conducted during your servicing.

Crystal Replacement

Since most people wear their watches regularly, your watch crystal can oftentimes become damaged, scratched or cracked. The watchmaker can easily buff out the scratches and replace the crystal if needed.

Battery Replacement

In most cases, we can replace your battery while you wait.
